What Does the Bible Say About Jesus' Mission?
Jesus didn't come to establish a religion, build an empire, or gather a fanbase. He came with a specific, world-altering mission: to seek and save the lost, to destroy the works of the devil, and to open the way for broken people to know God. His mission was announced before His birth, demonstrated in His life, and accomplished at the cross. These fifteen verses reveal why Jesus came and what His coming means for every human heart.
- 1.
Luke 19:10
"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost."
Jesus' mission statement is simple and stunning: He came looking for the lost, not waiting for them to find Him.
- 2.
John 3:16
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life."
The mission begins in love so vast it gives what is most precious. Belief is the door; eternal life is the gift.
- 3.
John 10:10
"The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly."
Jesus came to reverse the thief's work — not just survival, but abundant life in every dimension.
- 4.
Matthew 1:21
"She shall give birth to a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins."
Before Jesus took a step, His name declared His mission: salvation from sin, not just trouble or circumstance.
- 5.
Isaiah 61:1–3
"The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is on me, because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to those who are bound..."
Jesus' mission is comprehensive: healing for the broken, freedom for the captive, and beauty for ashes.
- 6.
Mark 10:45
"For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
The mission required Jesus' life as the purchase price. He served us by dying for us — a ransom paid in full.
- 7.
2 Corinthians 5:18–19
"All things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation; namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses."
Jesus' mission was reconciliation — removing the barrier of sin so God and humanity could be at peace again.
- 8.
John 14:6
"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.'"
Jesus didn't come to show a way — He came to be the way. Access to God is exclusively through Christ.
- 9.
1 Timothy 1:15
"The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief."
Jesus came for sinners — not the self-righteous but the self-aware. His mission target is anyone who admits need.
- 10.
Hebrews 2:14–15
"Since then the children have shared in flesh and blood, he also himself in the same way partook of the same, that through death he might bring to nothing him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might deliver all of them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage."
Jesus became human to destroy death's power and free us from the fear that enslaved us.
- 11.
Matthew 28:19–20
"Go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
The mission doesn't end with Jesus — it extends through His followers to every nation, with His enduring presence.
- 12.
John 6:38
"For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me."
Jesus' mission was submission to the Father's will. Every act of His life was an act of obedience, not autonomy.
- 13.
1 John 3:8
"He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was revealed: that he might destroy the works of the devil."
Jesus came to dismantle everything the devil built. His mission is destructive — of evil — and constructive — of life.
- 14.
Revelation 21:4
"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away."
The mission has a destination: a world where sorrow, death, and pain are permanently removed.
- 15.
John 17:3
"This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ."
The ultimate gift of Jesus' mission isn't just heaven — it's knowing God personally, now and forever.
