What Does the Bible Say About Parenting?

Parenting is one of life's greatest callings and one of its hardest assignments. Scripture doesn't offer a rigid manual, but it does give clear principles: nurture over exasperation, discipline over neglect, teaching over silence, and love over everything. These fifteen verses speak to the heart of raising children in the fear and instruction of the Lord — with grace, intention, and hope.

  1. 1.

    Ephesians 6:4

"You fathers, don't provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."

Parenting balances two things: not exasperating your children and intentionally shaping them in the ways of God.

  2. 2.

    Proverbs 22:6

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."

Early investment in a child's spiritual direction tends to stick. The path you set often becomes the path they keep.

  3. 3.

    Deuteronomy 6:6–7

"These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up."

Faith isn't taught in scheduled lessons alone — it's woven into everyday life, in every room and every journey.

  4. 4.

    Psalm 127:3

"Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward."

Children aren't possessions or projects — they're gifts entrusted by God. Parenting is stewardship, not ownership.

  5. 5.

    Colossians 3:21

"Fathers, don't provoke your children, so that they won't be discouraged."

A discouraged child is a warning sign. Parenting should build up, not tear down; encourage, not embitter.

  6. 6.

    Proverbs 29:17

"Correct your son, and he will give you peace; yes, he will bring delight to your soul."

    Discipline isn't punishment — it's correction with a future. A well-corrected child becomes a source of joy.

  7. 7.

    Psalm 103:13

"Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him."

God parents us with compassion, not cruelty. Earthly parents are called to mirror that same tender heart.

  8. 8.

    Malachi 4:6

"He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers."

Restored relationships between generations are a sign of God's work. The heart-turn is divine, not merely human.

  9. 9.

    Proverbs 13:24

"One who spares the rod hates his son, but one who loves him is careful to discipline him."

Loving discipline isn't easy, but avoiding it isn't kind. Correction done in love protects a child from greater harm.

  10. 10.

    2 Timothy 3:15

"From infancy, you have known the Holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus."

The seeds of Scripture planted in childhood grow into the wisdom of salvation. Start early; the roots run deep.

  11. 11.

    Luke 2:52

"And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men."

Even Jesus grew gradually — in wisdom, body, and relationships. Children need room and time to develop holistically.

  12. 12.

    Proverbs 1:8–9

"My son, listen to your father's instruction, and don't forsake your mother's teaching; for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck."

Parental instruction isn't a burden — it's an ornament of beauty and honor for the child who receives it.

  13. 13.

    Titus 2:4–5

"Admonish the young women to be lovers of their husbands, lovers of their children... that no one will malign the word of God."

How parents love their families either adorns or undermines the gospel. Home life is a witness.

  14. 14.

    Matthew 19:14

"But Jesus said, 'Allow the little children, and don't forbid them to come to me; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these.'"

Jesus welcomed children directly. Parents are called to bring their children to Him, not keep them at a distance.

  15. 15.

    Psalm 78:4

"We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh, and his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done."

Faith is a relay race. Each generation must pass the baton of God's praise to the next, never hiding what He has done.
