15 Bible Verses for Anxiety
Anxiety can feel like a noise that won't quiet down — racing thoughts, a tight chest, a future that refuses to stay still long enough to hold. Scripture meets that noise with a different voice. Not a dismissive one ("don't worry"), but a steady one: I am with you. Cast it on me. My peace is different from the world's. The verses below are some of the Bible's most direct answers to an anxious heart, each paired with a short reflection. Read slowly. Pick one. Let it sit with you longer than the worry did.
- 1.
Philippians 4:6–7
"In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus."
Anxiety shrinks when prayer expands. Paul doesn't promise the circumstance will change — he promises a peace that outlasts your ability to explain it.
- 2.
1 Peter 5:6–7
"Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time, casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you."
Casting is a one-time throw, not a careful set-down. You're invited to hand the whole weight over because the One holding it actually cares about you.
- 3.
Matthew 6:34
"Therefore don't be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day's own evil is sufficient."
Most anxiety is rent paid on tomorrow. Jesus gives permission to live one day at a time — today's grace is enough for today.
- 4.
Isaiah 41:10
"Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness."
Four promises in one breath: presence, strength, help, and a hand that holds. Anxiety lies and says you're alone — this verse answers every word of it.
- 5.
Psalm 94:19
"In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul."
When your mind is loud with worry, God's comfort is louder. He doesn't silence the thoughts — He outweighs them.
- 6.
John 14:27
"Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful."
The world's peace depends on the situation. Christ's peace depends on Christ — which is why it can hold steady when nothing else does.
- 7.
Psalm 55:22
"Cast your burden on Yahweh and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved."
Sustain doesn't mean rescued from — it means held through. He carries you and the burden at the same time.
- 8.
Matthew 11:28–30
"Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
Jesus doesn't shame the tired. He invites them. Anxiety wears the soul out — He offers rest for that exact place.
- 9.
Psalm 34:4
"I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears."
Seeking is the part you can do today. Answering and delivering are His. Start with the one step that's yours.
- 10.
Romans 8:38–39
"For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God's love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Anxiety often whispers that something could undo God's love for you. Paul builds an exhaustive list to say: nothing can.
- 11.
Psalm 23:4
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
Notice what gives the courage — not the absence of the valley, but the presence of the Shepherd inside it.
- 12.
2 Timothy 1:7
"For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control."
The fearful spirit isn't from God. What He gives is power to act, love to soften, and a clear mind to choose the next right thing.
- 13.
Proverbs 12:25
"Anxiety in a man's heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad."
Even small kindness — yours, or someone else's — is part of how God lifts the weight. Don't underestimate the little encouragements He sends.
- 14.
Psalm 46:10
"Be still, and know that I am God."
Stillness isn't doing nothing. It's the active choice to stop managing the universe and let God be God for a moment.
- 15.
Joshua 1:9
"Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go."
Courage is commanded, which means it isn't a feeling you wait for — it's a step you take, anchored in the promise that He goes with you.
