15 Bible Verses for Fear

"Don't be afraid" is one of the most repeated commands in the Bible — not because fear isn't real, but because God's presence is more real. The verses below are some of Scripture's clearest words for a fearful moment: they don't dismiss the threat, they reframe it next to the One who walks through the valley with you. Read slowly. Pick one. Let it become louder than the fear.

  1. 1.

    2 Timothy 1:7

"For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control."

Fear isn't from Him. Power, love, and self-control are. When fear shows up, you're not stuck with it — there's a different spirit available.

  2. 2.

    Isaiah 41:10

"Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness."

Four promises in one breath: presence, strength, help, a hand that holds. Fear shrinks when those become louder than the threat.

  3. 3.

    Psalm 23:4

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

David doesn't deny the valley. He just notes Who's walking through it with him.

  4. 4.

    Psalm 27:1

"Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?"

Fear shrinks when the Lord grows. Two questions you can ask the next time fear shows up.

  5. 5.

    Joshua 1:9

"Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go."

Courage is commanded. That means it isn't a feeling you wait for — it's a step you take, knowing He's with you.

  6. 6.

    Deuteronomy 31:8

"Yahweh himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don't be afraid. Don't be discouraged."

He goes before, walks with, never fails, never forsakes. There's no scenario your fear can drag you into where He isn't already standing.

  7. 7.

    Psalm 56:3

"When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you."

David doesn't say "if." He says "when." Fear will come; trust is the response that keeps it from becoming master.

  8. 8.

    1 John 4:18

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love."

Fear and being-loved-perfectly can't share the same room. The more you settle into His love, the less oxygen fear has.

  9. 9.

    Matthew 10:28

"Don't be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna."

Jesus realigns fear. The worst people can do to you has a ceiling. God's authority doesn't.

  10. 10.

    Psalm 34:4

"I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears."

Seek first; rescue follows. The seeking is your part — He's never been hard to find.

  11. 11.

    Isaiah 43:1

"Don't be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine."

He knows your name. You belong to Him. That's the foundation under any "don't be afraid" He ever says.

  12. 12.

    Hebrews 13:6

"So that with good courage we say, "The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?""

When the Lord is your helper, you can stop scanning the room. The threat doesn't go away — it just stops being the loudest voice.

  13. 13.

    Romans 8:15

"For you didn't receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!""

Fear is the language of slavery. Sonship has a different vocabulary: Father.

  14. 14.

    Psalm 91:5–6

"You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day; nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday."

The psalmist names the things people fear most and answers them all with the shadow of the Almighty.

  15. 15.

    Mark 5:36

"But Jesus, when he heard the message spoken, immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Don't be afraid, only believe.""

When the worst news arrived, Jesus gave Jairus two short instructions — and they're still the right ones.
