What Does the Bible Say About Temptation?

Temptation isn't a sign that something is wrong with you — it's a sign you're alive in a fallen world. Scripture is honest about it and full of help for it: a faithful God who always provides a way out, a Savior who was tempted as we are, and a Spirit who empowers every quiet 'no.' These fifteen verses are a steady companion for the moments the pull feels strong.

   1 Corinthians 10:13

   "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

   Every temptation has a door marked 'exit.' God's faithfulness guarantees there's a way through.

   James 1:12

   "Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."

   Endurance isn't glamorous, but it's crowned. God notices every quiet 'no.'

   James 1:13–14

   "Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire."

   Temptation isn't God testing us with evil — it's our own desire being baited. Naming the source helps disarm it.

   Matthew 26:41

   "Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

   Jesus didn't shame the weakness — He prescribed watchfulness and prayer for it.

   Hebrews 4:15

   "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin."

   Jesus understands temptation from the inside. You're not bringing your struggle to a stranger.

   "For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted."

   Christ's own battles with temptation became His credentials to help us in ours.

   James 4:7

   "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

   Resistance works in this order: submit to God first, then resist the enemy. The flight follows.

   1 Peter 5:8–9

   "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world."

   Temptation often roars to scare us into surrender. Steady faith refuses to flinch.

   Galatians 5:16

   "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."

   The defense against temptation isn't just willpower — it's a way of walking, Spirit-led step by step.

    Romans 6:14

    "For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace."

    Sin isn't your master anymore. Temptation can knock, but it can no longer claim the house.

    Proverbs 4:14–15

    "Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on."

    The wisest way to win a fight with temptation is sometimes to never enter the room.

    2 Timothy 2:22

    "So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart."

    Fleeing and pursuing happen together. You don't just run from — you run toward.

    Matthew 6:13

    "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."

    Jesus taught us to pray about temptation daily. Dependence is a posture, not a one-time choice.

    Psalm 119:11

    "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you."

    Scripture stored in the heart becomes the first response when temptation speaks.

    2 Peter 2:9

    "Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment."

    God knows how. The strategy isn't yours to invent — it's His to apply.
