Trusting God when you can't see the way

1. 1.

   Proverbs 3:5–6

   "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."

   Not a promise of an easy road, but of a straight one — God directing a life submitted to Him.

   Psalm 56:3

   "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you."

   David does not deny the fear. He redirects it. Trust is what you do with fear, not the absence of it.

   Isaiah 26:3

   "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you."

   Peace follows attention. A mind fixed elsewhere will not find it.

   Psalm 37:5

   "Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act."

   Committing is the handoff. Waiting for Him to act is where trust is actually tested.

   Proverbs 16:9

   "The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps."

   Planning is not faithless. Assuming your plan is final is.

   Jeremiah 17:7–8

   "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit."

   The tree still faces drought. What changes is where its roots are drinking from.

Trusting God's character

Trust is only as reliable as its object. Scripture grounds it in who God is, not in how we feel about our circumstances.

   Psalm 9:10

   "And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you."

   Trust grows out of knowledge. Learn who He is and trusting Him becomes reasonable.

   Numbers 23:19

   "God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?"

   He is not weighing whether to keep His word. That is the ground under your feet.

   Lamentations 3:22–23

   "The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

   Written in the ruins of Jerusalem. Faithfulness confessed at the worst possible moment.

   Psalm 18:2

   "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."

   Six images for one truth: He is not fragile, and He is not far.

   Romans 8:28

   "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."

   The good in view is verse 29's — being conformed to Christ. That is a deeper promise than comfort.

   Isaiah 55:8–9

   "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."

   You will not always understand Him. That is an argument for trust, not against it.

Trusting God with worry and provision

1. 13.

   Matthew 6:31–33

   "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, "What shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?" or "What shall we wear?" … But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

   Jesus does not scold anxiety; He replaces it with a Father who knows what you need.

2. 14.

   1 Peter 5:6–7

   "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you."

   Casting anxiety is an act of humility — admitting you were never the one holding it all up.

   Philippians 4:6–7

   "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

   The command comes with a means: prayer. Peace is guarded, not manufactured.

   Psalm 55:22

   "Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved."

   Sustained is different from spared. He carries you through what He does not remove.

5. 17.

   Philippians 4:19

   "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."

   Every need — not every want. Paul wrote it to a church that had just given sacrificially.

Trusting God while you wait

1. 18.

   Psalm 27:14

   "Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!"

   He says it twice. The repetition is for people on their second or third year of waiting.

2. 19.

   Isaiah 40:31

   "But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."

   Waiting on God is not idleness. It is the posture in which strength is renewed.

3. 20.

   Psalm 130:5

   "I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope."

   Hope needs content. His word is what keeps waiting from collapsing into wishing.
