15 Bible Verses for Depression

Depression is a heaviness Scripture doesn't shy away from. The psalmists name it out loud — "Why are you in despair, my soul?" — and the God they're writing to answers with a steady word: He is near to the crushed in spirit, His mercies are new every morning, and the valley is something you're walking through, not living in. The verses below are some of the Bible's clearest words for the heavy heart. Read slowly. Pick one. Let it sit with you today.

  1. 1.

    Psalm 34:17–18

"The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit."

Depression often whispers that you're far from Him. This verse says the opposite — a crushed spirit is where He's nearest.

  2. 2.

    Psalm 42:11

"Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, my God, the help of my countenance."

The psalmist talks to his own soul. When you can't argue your way out of the heaviness, you can speak truth into it the way he does.

  3. 3.

    Lamentations 3:22–23

"It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning."

Yesterday's reserves don't have to carry today. There's a fresh supply waiting at sunrise.

  4. 4.

    Matthew 11:28

"Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest."

He calls the heavy ones by name. The invitation is specifically for the people who feel they have nothing left to bring.

  5. 5.

    Psalm 40:1–2

"I waited patiently for Yahweh. He turned to me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and established my goings."

David names the pit and the mud. He doesn't pretend it wasn't real. But he also names the rock under his feet now.

  6. 6.

    Isaiah 41:10

"Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness."

Four verbs from God on a heavy day: with, strengthen, help, uphold. Read them slow.

  7. 7.

    Psalm 147:3

"He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds."

Healing the heart is His specialty. Not avoidance, not bypassing — actual binding up of what's torn.

  8. 8.

    John 14:27

"Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful."

Jesus' peace doesn't depend on the heaviness lifting. It can hold a heart that's still in the middle of the dark.

  9. 9.

    Psalm 23:4

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

The valley is real and you're walking through it — not stuck in it forever. He's with you the whole length.

  10. 10.

    2 Corinthians 1:3–4

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction."

Comfort is His name, plural — mercies. Whatever shape the affliction takes, His comfort already has a shape for it.

  11. 11.

    Psalm 73:26

"My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

Asaph admits it: my heart is failing. And then he names what's still standing — God Himself. Both can be true at the same time.

  12. 12.

    Romans 15:13

"Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit."

Hope isn't something you manufacture. It's something the God of hope fills you with — usually slowly, by His Spirit.

  13. 13.

    Psalm 9:9

"Yahweh will also be a high tower for the oppressed; a high tower in times of trouble."

He is a place to go. Not a feeling to chase — a tower to step inside.

  14. 14.

    Psalm 30:5

"Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning."

Night isn't the end of the sentence. It's the comma. Morning is always coming.

  15. 15.

    Isaiah 43:2

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned."

He doesn't always part the water. But He walks in.
