20 Bible Verses for Encouragement

Some days you don't need a sermon — you just need a word from God that says keep going. The verses below are the kind you can hold onto when the day is harder than you expected. Read slowly. Borrow the ones you need.

  1. 1.

    Joshua 1:9

"Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go."

God's command isn't just "be brave." It's "be brave because I'm with you." Courage is a response to His presence, not a personality trait.

  2. 2.

    Isaiah 40:31

"But those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint."

Waiting isn't passive here. It's the posture that gets the strength. He doesn't always remove what's hard — He gives you what you need to keep moving through it.

  3. 3.

    Philippians 4:13

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Paul wrote this from prison. It isn't a slogan for easy days — it's a confession from someone who'd seen God hold him up in the hardest ones.

  4. 4.

    Deuteronomy 31:6

"Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you."

He won't fail you and He won't leave. Two promises stacked together for the days you're certain one of them is about to break.

  5. 5.

    Psalm 27:14

"Wait for Yahweh. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for Yahweh."

He says it twice in one verse. The waiting itself is the work — and there's courage on the other side of it.

  6. 6.

    Isaiah 41:10

"Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness."

Four promises in one verse: with you, your God, your strength, your help. Underline whichever one you need today.

  7. 7.

    2 Corinthians 4:16–17

"Therefore we don't faint, but though our outward person is decaying, yet our inward person is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory."

Paul calls suffering "light" and "momentary" — not because it doesn't hurt, but because of what God is building on the other side of it.

  8. 8.

    Psalm 46:1

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

Not a distant help. A very present one. The trouble doesn't have to end for Him to be near.

  9. 9.

    Romans 8:31

"What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

Whatever's lined up against you today, it's not in God's league. Let that settle the noise.

  10. 10.

    Galatians 6:9

"Let's not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season if we don't give up."

The harvest is real, and it's coming. Don't quit twenty steps short of it.

  11. 11.

    Hebrews 12:1–2

"Let's lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let's run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith…"

Run looking at Him, not at the distance left. He's the reason you started and the reason you'll finish.

  12. 12.

    Psalm 73:26

"My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

When your own strength gives out, His becomes the one you're standing on. That's not a downgrade — it's the truer foundation.

  13. 13.

    Lamentations 3:22–23

"It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness."

Yesterday's mercy was for yesterday. He has fresh mercy waiting for the morning ahead.

  14. 14.

    John 16:33

"I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world."

Jesus didn't promise an easier world. He promised that He'd already won the bigger fight inside it.

  15. 15.

    Psalm 34:18

"Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit."

He moves toward the broken, not away. Nearness is how He answers a crushed spirit.

  16. 16.

    Zephaniah 3:17

"Yahweh, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing."

He sings over His redeemed. The God who saves rejoices over the people He has gathered to Himself — that is the foundation under any quiet day.

  17. 17.

    2 Thessalonians 3:3

"But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one."

He's the one who keeps you standing. The faithfulness is His, not yours — that's the relief.

  18. 18.

    Psalm 23:4

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

Through the valley, not around it. But never alone in it.

  19. 19.

    1 Peter 5:10

"But may the God of all grace, who called you into his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you."

Suffering has an expiration date and a purpose. He's using it to settle you, not to break you.

  20. 20.

    Romans 15:13

"Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope in the power of the Holy Spirit."

Joy, peace, and hope aren't things you have to produce. They're things He fills you with as you believe.

When you need encouragement for what you're walking through specifically

Encouragement isn't generic. It lands when it meets the exact thing you're facing — the meeting you're dreading, the relationship you're tired in, the diagnosis you don't have a category for. Describe what's heavy today and VerseFinder will surface Scripture that speaks to it.
