15 Bible Verses for Forgiveness

Forgiveness runs in two directions in Scripture — the forgiveness God offers freely, and the forgiveness we're called to extend in turn. Both can feel impossible, and both are possible because of the cross. The verses below speak to both: receiving mercy you didn't earn, and releasing the weight of an offense you didn't deserve. Read slowly. Pick one. Let it begin its work.

  1. 1.

    1 John 1:9

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Confession isn't groveling; it's agreeing with God. The forgiveness is already standing by, waiting for honesty.

  2. 2.

    Ephesians 4:32

"And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you."

The pattern of forgiving others is the way Christ forgave you. The measure isn't fairness — it's grace.

  3. 3.

    Colossians 3:13

"Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do."

If you carry a complaint long enough it becomes a chain. Christ's forgiveness is the key — the same one you've been handed.

  4. 4.

    Matthew 6:14–15

"For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."

Jesus ties our willingness to extend mercy to our experience of receiving it. Bitterness blocks the very pipe grace flows through.

  5. 5.

    Psalm 103:12

"As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."

East and west never meet. That's the distance God has put between you and your sin.

  6. 6.

    Micah 7:18–19

"Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn't retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. He will again have compassion on us. He will tread our iniquities under foot; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea."

He doesn't just forgive — He delights in it. Your sin is in the deep; don't go fishing for it.

  7. 7.

    Isaiah 1:18

"Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."

There's no shade of red He can't make white. The exchange is total.

  8. 8.

    Matthew 18:21–22

"Then Peter came and said to him, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times?" Jesus said to him, "I don't tell you until seven times, but, until seventy times seven.""

Jesus moves the math from limit to lifestyle. Forgiveness isn't a quota; it's a posture.

  9. 9.

    Luke 23:34

"Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing.""

From a cross, with nails in His hands, He prayed forgiveness over the people who put Him there. There's nothing your forgiveness needs to wait for.

  10. 10.

    Acts 3:19

"Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord."

Repentance leads to refreshing. Carrying unconfessed sin is exhausting; turning toward Him brings air back into the room.

  11. 11.

    Psalm 32:1–2

"Blessed is he whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom Yahweh doesn't impute iniquity, in whose spirit there is no deceit."

Blessed isn't "sinless." Blessed is forgiven. That's the only category any of us live in.

  12. 12.

    Hebrews 8:12

"For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness. I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more."

God doesn't just forgive; He chooses to forget. If He's not bringing it up, you don't have to either.

  13. 13.

    Mark 11:25

"Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions."

Forgiveness isn't reserved for the moment you feel ready. It's part of how you pray. Release on the spot.

  14. 14.

    Romans 12:19

"Don't seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath. For it is written, "Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.""

Forgiving isn't pretending it didn't matter. It's handing the case file to a Judge who sees better than you do.

  15. 15.

    Ephesians 1:7

"In whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace."

Forgiveness cost something — His blood. It's free to you, but it was never cheap.
